Sir James Anderton was a controversial former chief constable who led one of Great Britain’s largest police forces for about 15 years. The man who was always called “God’s copper” died at the age of 89.
Many say they will remember him for his stance on his Christian faith and his claims that his way of policing was divinely guided. Others say his inflammatory remarks about gay people at the time made him the most controversial police officer in Britain.
Anderton led a crackdown on pornography, late-night drinking, clubbing, and prostitution.
The God’s Cop, as he was known, advocated castration for rapists and corporal punishment for offenders until they “repent of their sins.”He also made it clear that he is answerable to a higher authority than the Home Office.
“God works in mysterious ways,” he said. “Given my love of God and my belief in God and Jesus Christ, I have to accept that I may well be used by God.”
