Making

– Cut the beef into slices
– Mix the salt, sugar and bicarbonate of soda in a bowl
– In another bowl, mix coriander and pepper
– Rub vinegar on the meat, then put in a bowl of coriander and pepper
– Take out and place in a bowl of salt, sugar and bicarbonate of soda for 3 hours
– After this take out the meat and rub vinegar on it again, then hang to dry
The drying process may take more than 48 hours. Once this is done, your Biltong is ready.

SA Ginger Cookies

Ingredients:

– Corn syrup
– Butter
– Eggs
– Vinegar
– Dried ginger
– Cinnamon
– Ground cloves
– Brown sugar
– Flour
– Baking soda
– Salt.
Making

– Mix the butter, corn syrup, eggs, cinnamon, and cloves in a bowl
– Stir sugar into the mixture and add flour, baking soda and salt.
– Mix and make a dough, then cover and keep for some hours in a cool place.
– Next, roll the dough into small balls
– Put the small balls in oiled pans
– Bake until they turn brown

South African Bobotie

Of all South African dishes, bobotie stands out as quite unique. It is made from minced meat which is baked with egg toppings. History claims bobotie actually began in Rome over 2000 years ago. Today, however, it is a great South African dish.

Ingredients:

– A slice of bread
– Bilk
– Cooking oil
– Butter
– Onion
– Minced beef
– Egg
– Water
– Lemon Juice
– Other things needed are salt, turmeric, chutney, crushed garlic, and curry powder.
Making

– Before starting South African Bobotie, soak the bread in milk
– Then heat the oil in a pot and fry the onions and garlic.
– When the onion is slightly browned, add salt, meat, curry, turmeric, vinegar, lemon juice and chutney and mix properly
– Take out bread from the milk and mash it
– Add the milk to the mixture
– Continuously stir as you cook under low heat until the meat is done
– Beat the egg and add
– Pour the entire mixture into an oiled baking pan
– Beat one more egg and milk and pour over mixture
– Pop the pan into the oven and bake
South African Melktert

Melktert is South Africa’s milk tart. It is not your normal dessert as it has its taste and flavour. Unless you get to try it, you can never tell.

Ingredients:

– Melted butter
– White sugar
– Egg yolk
– Cake flour
– Baking powder
– Also, salt, vanilla extract, milk, egg white and cinnamon are needed.
Making

– First, heat a portion of the milk until it boils
– Mix the remaining milk with the flour, extracts, egg yolk and salt
– Once done, add the mixture to the hot milk
– Cook again until it turns thick.
– Beat egg white until it stiffens
– Then add to milk mixture once it is off the stove for 5 to 10 minutes
– Mix in butter then pour into pans
– Sprinkle cinnamon and set to cool
Shisa Nyama

This is a special kind of South African barbecue. Also known as braai, it is done by grilling meat on an open fire. The special thing about the braai is that the process of making and eating it is supposed to be enjoyed by friends and family.

Ingredients:

– Crushed chillies
– Steak and chops spice
– Tomato sauce
– Chutney and long pieces of boerewors (prepared sausage) or meat.
Making

– Put the boerewors or meat in a bowl
– Mix chutney, tomato sauce, Steak and Chops, and crushed chillies
– Turn the mixed sauce into the boerewors or meat and leave for an hour or more
– When the hour is up, thread the boerewors or meat through sticks without cutting
– Place onion at the edge of the boerewors or meat on stick
– Grill and cut between the sticks
