Military officials have identified the five Marines killed when their MV-22B Osprey crashed during a training mission in Imperial County on Wednesday.

They were assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 364, which is part of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, according to a statement published Friday night by Maj. Mason Englehart of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.

According to Englehart, the cause of the collision is still being studied.

It happened around 12:25 p.m. Wednesday near Coachella Canal Road and Highway 78, according to authorities.
The plane was carrying radioactive goods, according to emergency responders’ radio conversations and social media posts from the area. Officials from the Marine Corps later acknowledged that the reports were incorrect.

The Osprey is a tilt-rotor aircraft that can take off and land like a helicopter and fly like an airplane by tilting its rotors. The plane is used by the Marines, Navy, and Air Force to transport personnel and equipment. It has a higher top speed and range than a helicopter, yet it can also hover and land like one.
