Shushkievich, Stanislav Stanislavovich, was a politician and a scientist. He was born in the Belarusian city of Minsk in the year 1934. He was a member of the Social Democratic Assembly of Belarus.

He was the first head of state of independent Belarus after the disintegration of the Soviet Union, serving as Chairman of the Supreme Soviet from August 25, 1991, until January 26, 1994.

Shushkievich was a professor, doctor of physics and mathematics, author of numerous textbooks and papers, and inventor of more than 50 innovations.

Irina Shushkievich was married to the former Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Belarus. Stanislav was their son, and Elena was their daughter.
