Steven Funaki Adams, a professional basketball player for the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association (NBA), was born in Rotorua, New Zealand, on July 20, 1993.

He was known as Steven Adams and only played one season with his hometown team Wellington Saints in 2011.

Adams moved to the United States in 2012 to play collegiate basketball for the Pittsburgh Panthers. In June 2013, he was taken with the 12th overall pick in the NBA draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Adams enrolled in Notre Dame Preparatory School after graduating from Scots College in December 2011.

He was eventually selected for the Big East Preseason Rookie of the Year and was named to the Big East All-Rookie Team. During the 2012–13 season, the basketball player started all 32 games and averaged 7.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game.

On April 2, 2013, Adams entered the NBA draft, forgoing his remaining three years of NCAA eligibility.
