A Samoan father and an Indigenous Australian (Wiradjuri) mother gave birth to Tuivasa in Sydney. With 11 siblings, he was raised in the western Sydney suburb of Mount Druitt and spent his formative years primarily playing rugby league. He was signed by the Sydney Roosters rugby league team in 2010, however, he stopped playing the sport after getting addicted to gambling.

In November 2016, Tuivasa signed a four-fight contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Tuivasa revealed that he was forced to miss significant time owing to a knee ailment and subsequent surgery.

Tuivasa made his UFC debut against Rashad Coulter on November 19, 2017, at UFC Fight Night: Werdum vs. Tybura. Tuivasa knocked out the opponent in the first round with a flying knee. He became Australia’s first indigenous fighter to win a UFC fight. This victory also won him the Performance of the Night bonus.
