In 2018, eleven members of the Chundawat family from Burari, Delhi, committed ritual mass suicide. Ten people were found hanged, while the grandmother, the oldest member of the family, was strangled. The bodies were discovered on July 1, 2018, in the early morning hours following the death. The police determined that the deaths were the result of a shared delusion or psychosis.

On the morning of July 1, 2018, around 7:15 a.m., a neighbor, Gurcharan Singh, who used to go on morning walks with one of the deceased, went to the Chundawat residence after noticing Lalit Chundawat’s absence for the morning walk, as well as the fact that the Chundawat’s shops were still closed (the shops usually opened between 5 and 5:30 am). Gurcharan Singh discovered the house’s door open and ten people hanging, including Lalit Chundawat. He alerted his neighbors, and police responded around 7:30 a.m. Evidence discovered in the house suggested mass suicide for occult reasons, and post-mortem examination of the bodies revealed no signs of struggle. Nonetheless, due to the public nature of the case, pressure from hardline groups, and accusations of a coverup from relatives, the police initially recorded the case as a murder and investigated the possibility of a non-occult murder.
