Thomas Müller replaced Stephan Fürstner in a Regionalliga game against SpVgg Unterhaching in March 2008, and he scored on the play. This was his first appearance with the reserve squad. While continuing to play on the under-19 team, Müller made two further Regionalliga appearances in the 2007–08 campaign.
Along with seven other Bayern Munich players, Thomas Müller was included in the preliminary roster of Germany’s World Cup roster of 27 players. Müller had a scare when he fell off his bike at the team’s training camp in South Tyrol, but he only suffered minor wounds and made the tournament roster when the squad was whittled down to 23 players. Müller received the number 13, which was formerly worn by Müller’s namesake Gerd Müller and is currently being worn by injured captain Michael Ballack.
