Just before he was born, his mother Ercilia Ortiz from Coamo and father Ernest Sr. from Guayanilla both arrived in New York from Puerto Rico. Tito was raised in East Harlem, also known as “El Barrio,” which was primarily populated by Puerto Rican immigrants.
Tito once claimed that “Due to the two-month rent-free policy at the time, my parents relocated from Brooklyn to El Barrio. Until my father eventually settled down, we moved back and forth between blocks frequently. He finally rose to the position of foreman at the Brooklyn-based Gem Razor Blade Company.”
