Tom O’Riordan died on 20 June 2022 at the age of 84. According to sources, O’Riordan suffered from Parkinson’s Disease. He described the disease as “a bit of a struggle”.

Tom and Barbara O’Riordan had children together, whom he described as “the bedrock of his life”. One of his children, Ian O’Riordan, is also a runner who is currently into journalism. He is now working with The Irish Times as the athletics correspondent.
