In the Kansas City Chiefs’ season opener, they narrowly lost by just one point. However, it’s important for fans to consider some key factors in their performance.

They were without their top two players aside from Patrick Mahomes.

Travis Kelce and Chris Jones, both All-Pros, will be making their first appearances of the season this Sunday.

Kelce, widely regarded as the best tight end in football, was absent from the opener against the Detroit Lions due to a knee injury he sustained in practice just two days before the game. Although he attempted to play through it, the Chiefs chose to prioritize his long-term health.

In the opener, a total of twelve different Chiefs players caught passes, but there were notable drops, including three by Kadarius Toney.

Chris Jones, on the other hand, missed all of training camp and the first week of the season due to a contract dispute. He recently reached an agreement that includes additional incentives for the final year of his contract, which is expected to substantially increase his earnings this season, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Jones, who will become a free agent after this season, watched the Lions game from a suite at Arrowhead Stadium.

Travis Kelce playfully teased fans by mimicking his knee injury on Friday, but then surprised everyone with a dance move. Despite being injury-free since his rookie season in 2013, Kelce did sustain a knee injury in the lead-up to the game, avoiding any ligament damage but dealing with a bone bruise and swelling.

Kelce is coming off what is arguably his best NFL season, which was his 10th in the league. He finished the season with remarkable stats, including 110 receptions for 1,338 yards and 12 touchdowns, all of which were career highs. He also played a crucial role in securing his second Super Bowl ring, scoring a touchdown against his brother’s team, the Eagles.

As for Chris Jones, he is coming off his first-ever first-team All-Pro season, having previously been named second-team All-Pro three times and making four consecutive Pro Bowl appearances with the Chiefs.

The Chiefs are set to face the Jacksonville Jaguars at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
