Anthony Edward Sowell grew up in East Cleveland, Ohio, as one of seven children of single mother Claudia “Gertrude” Garrison. Seven additional children from Sowell’s sister were in the house as well, having moved there after her death from a severe illness. Garrison allegedly subjected them to physical abuse as her own children watched from neighboring rooms, according to Sowell’s niece, Leona Davis.
Sowell began raping his niece practically every day for two years, beginning when she was ten years old. Davis said that the other guys in the family were also involved in the rapes.

Tressa Garrison, Sowell’s maternal half-sister, stated that her brother took marijuana prior to joining the military and that she held herself responsible for not supporting him in stopping.
Tressa Garrison, Sowell’s younger sister, was one of his close friends. Her brother used to be a cheery “attention seeker,” according to her. They weathered a terrible and harsh childhood together. He had changed after serving in the Marines for seven years, she said.
