Abdul was a lecturer and an economist from Malaysia. He worked double duty.

Between the years 1956 and 1957, Abdul served as the first General Director of the Council on Language and Literature of Malaysia.

During this time, he was also the third Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya, which he held from 1968 to 1988.

In 1978, the university gave him the title of Profesor Diraja.

Abdul was a member of the Royal Family of Johor from birth. His grandfather, Ungku Abdul Majid, was a well-known Malayan prince who also held the position of a military officer. His father’s name was Ungku Abdul Hamid.

On the side of his father’s family, Abdul was a cousin of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas and Syed Hussein Alatas, in addition to Sultan Ibrahim of Johor.

His father was of Malay and Turkish (Circassian) descent, while his mother was of English descent. His mother’s side of the family was English.
