Ungku Abdul came from the Royal Family of Johor. His father was a royal and military official from Malaya by the name of Ungku Abdul Hamid Ungku Abdul Majid. On his father’s side, he was related to Sultan Ibrahim of Johor, Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, and Syed Hussein Alatas. While his mother was English, his father was Malay and Turkish (Circassian). He received his diplomas from the Malay school in Batu Pahat and the English college in Johore Bahru. In 1951, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics at University of Malaya, Singapore (now University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur), and his Diploma in the Arts from Raffles College, Singapore (now University of Malaya). In 1964, he went on to defend his doctoral dissertation at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan.

Ungku Abdul’s daughter, Zeti Akhtar Aziz, was the former governor of Bank Negara Malaysia, Malaysia’s central bank.

The Johor Royal Family was his birthright. His father was a Malayan royal and military official named Ungku Abdul Hamid Ungku Abdul Majid. On his father’s side, he was a cousin of Sultan Ibrahim of Johor, Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, Syed Hussein Alatas, and Syed Hussein Alatas. His mother was English and his father was of Turkish (Circassian) and Malay ancestry.

 

Ungku Abdul Aziz Health Illness: What Disease Did Ungku Abdul Aziz Have?

Ungku Aziz passed away from old age at the Prince Court Medical Center in Kuala Lumpur at 4:30 in the evening. At the time of his death at the age of 98, Abdul Aziz was survived only by his wife Rohayah Ahmad Bahiran and his daughter Zeti Akhtar Aziz.

Bukit Kiara Muslim Cemetery in Kuala Lumpur is where Abdul Aziz was laid to rest. His passing was unrelated to any health issues, according to the family.
