H.J. Heinz fellowships are given by the University of Pittsburgh’s Global Studies Center to students from developing nations who want to pursue a master’s degree and show promise for becoming future leaders in the public, business, nonprofit, or governmental sectors.
During the residency, it will be expected that the Fellow will provide a minimum of one presentation to University members on a topic associated with their professional background.
Additionally, it is highly encouraged for the Fellow to take part in community outreach programs in the area by giving a talk to high school students or other interested individuals about their home country.
The candidate and the University agree upon the grantee’s acceptance of the award. Except for unanticipated circumstances, it is anticipated that grantees would stay for the duration of the award.
Benefits
Fellows will obtain a Heinz Program credential from the UCIS upon acceptance of their final report. The Fellowship lasts for one to two years. It provides living expenses in the form of a $19,200 monthly living stipend and a $1,000 program and professional activity fund.
Eligibility
Applicants need to fulfill the following requirements:
- Candidates must have been admitted to one of the following master’s programs: Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH), Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA), School of Law, School of Education, or School of Nursing, starting with the academic year for which they are applying for the Heinz Fellowship.
- Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
- Candidates need to be fluent in writing, speaking, and reading English.
- Candidates who are just starting out or in the middle of their careers will be given preference.
- Those working in the practitioner and policy areas are the target audience for the fellowship. Basic academic research, academic sabbaticals, and medical research are not eligible for this prize.
Guidelines for Fellowships
Fellows must turn in a final report detailing and assessing the entirety of their experiences and endeavors throughout the Fellowship, along with their intentions for going back home.
The University of Pittsburgh’s program authorities and the H.J. Heinz Company Foundation representatives receive these reports after that. Additionally, new Fellowship recipients will use these reports as references.
Deadline
Applicants must check with their school and academic year for the deadline of the Heinz Scholarship.

- August 1: Fellowship year begins
- June 30: Fellowship year ends
