Vanilla Ice was born Robert Matthew Van Winkle in South Dallas, Texas on October 31, 1967. Camilla Beth, his mother, raised him (Dickerson). His father abandoned him when Vanilla was four years old, and he has had numerous stepfathers since then.
On his mother’s side, Vanilla has German and English ancestors. Robert struggled in school during his adolescence, receiving poor grades and frequently skipping class. Vanilla left school when he was 18 and was in the tenth grade. Ice earned a living by washing cars in the late 1980s.
Vanilla studied the customs and dancing of some of his peers before registering as a performer at a nearby nightclub. He was naturally talented at rapping and dancing, and it goes without saying that the crowd adored him. As a result of his white skin, Vanilla later acquired the moniker “Vanilla Ice.”
Ice signed a record deal with SBK records in 1989, and the following year Vanilla released his debut album, “Hooked,” which featured the radio-friendly single “Play that Funky Music.” “Hooked” didn’t sell well and wasn’t a huge hit as a single.
Later, in 1990, a neighborhood DJ made the choice to flip the “Play that Funky Music” record over and start playing the music on the other side.
That single was “Ice Ice Baby,” which sampled Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure.” In contrast to “Play that Funky Music,” “Ice Ice Baby” was a huge success, and radio stations all over the country received requests to play it. Ice re-released “Hooked” as “To The Extreme,” which included “Ice Ice Baby,” and it sold over 15 million copies, making it the best-selling rap record of all time.
