His father’s family was from Maribor, now in Slovenia, and his mother’s family was from Styria. His parents were both educators.

He spent ten years studying at the Hochschule für Welthandel, now the Vienna University of Economics and Business, where he graduated with a marketing degree in 1972. At a young age, he developed an interest in and enthusiasm for extreme sports.

He owned 49% of Red Bull GmbH, a company he helped start. Mateschitz’s estimated net worth in October 2021 was $25.4 billion. Mateschitz was a marketer for Blendax and Unilever. He discovered the beverage Krating Daeng while travelling across Thailand, which he eventually transformed into Red Bull.
