In the Massachusetts town of Needham, Johnson was born. He went to Belmont Hill School and Needham High School in Massachusetts. Later, Johnson played wide receiver for Yale University. In the 1999 Harvard-Yale Game, Eric caught 21 passes for 244 yards and the game-winning touchdown catch as Yale overcame Harvard.
The San Francisco 49ers made Johnson their first-round pick in the 2001 NFL Draft. When he was healthy, Eric was a valuable component of the 49ers’ passing game. Johnson, on the other hand, was injured in both 2003 and 2005 and was forced to miss the entire season. With 82 receptions for 825 yards and two touchdowns in 2004, Johnson topped the 49ers in receiving.
