The Bruins men’s basketball team expressed “great sadness” on the death in a tweet. In a statement, head coach Mick Cronin said the passing was “heartbreaking.”
“At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with his family,” said Cronin, who coached Hill for two seasons at Westwood. “Jalen was a wonderful young man with a wonderful grin who left us far too soon.”

Hill’s family said on social media that the 6-foot-10 power forward “went missing while in Costa Rica and we have lately learned of his passing.” There were no further facts released about his demise.
Hill, a top-100 recruit out of Centennial High School in Corona, California, signed with the Bruins in 2017 but did not participate in his true freshman season after he and two other UCLA players, including LiAngelo Ball, were arrested for shoplifting while in China for a game in November 2017. He was suspended indefinitely following the incident, but returned to the organization and played for the Bruins from 2018 to 2021.
