In the film, Julie Powell, a young New Yorker who plans to make all 524 of the dishes in the cookbook in a year, compares Julia Child’s early years in the kitchen with those of Julia Child.

Powell’s memoir Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen, later titled Julie & Julia, My Year of Cooking Dangerously, and Child’s memoir My Life in France, which she co-wrote with Alex Prudhomme, both had an impact on Nora Ephron’s screenplay.
Both of these works were written and published between 2004 and 2006.
