The Edmund Fitzgerald was a ship that travelled the Great Lakes for 17 years, transporting taconite iron ore from mines in Duluth, Minnesota, to ironworks in Detroit, Toledo, and other Great Lakes ports. Six times as a workhorse, she broke her own records for hauling during a season.

Captain Peter Pulcer was renowned for playing music over the ship’s intercom day or night as it navigated St. Clair and Detroit rivers (between the lakes Huron and Erie) and for enlightening onlookers at the Soo Locks (between the lakes Superior and Huron) with a running commentary about the ship.
