The first Red Bull drink was created in 1962 by Thai businessman Chaleo Voovidhya and distributed by the company TC Pharmaceutical under the name Krating Daeng (Thai for Red Bull). The formula was based on Lipovitan, an older energy drink imported from Japan.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Krating Daeng sales increased across Asia, particularly among truck drivers, construction workers, and farmers. Sponsorship of Thai boxing fights bolstered the working-class image, with the emblem of two red bulls rushing each other frequently on display.

Dietrich Mateschitz, an Austrian entrepreneur, turned the Thai product into a global brand. When Mateschitz visited Thailand in 1982, he was the international marketing director for Blendax, a German toothpaste business, and noticed that Krating Daeng helped him recover from jet lag. Mateschitz collaborated with TC Pharmaceutical (a Blendax licensee) between 1984 and 1987 to modify Krating Daeng for European markets.

Simultaneously, Mateschitz and Voovidhya established Red Bull GmbH, each spending $500,000 and assuming a 49% interest in the new firm. They handed Yoovidhya’s son Chalerm the remaining 2%, but it was decided that Mateschitz would head the firm.

In 1987, Red Bull GmbH introduced the Austrian version of Red Bull, which is carbonated and not as sweet as the original Thai formulation. The Austrian recipe has captured over half of the US energy drink industry and up to 80% of the market in certain other nations.
