At the age of 85, the late Kerin passed away on Tuesday, March 27. He served as Bob Hawke’s treasurer after Paul Keating’s failed 1991 attempt to win the party’s leadership. He was Bowral, New South Wales’s, minister of primary industries and energy from 1983 to 1991. He was born in 1937.

Keating was made treasurer after John Kerin left the cabinet and sat on the opposition benches. Nevertheless, Mr. Hawke fired him following a notorious press conference in which he was unable to define the acronym for the budget, GOS, or gross operating surplus.

In addition to holding the positions of deputy chancellor at the University of Western Sydney and chairman of the Crawford Fund board at the Australian National University, Kerin was named a member of the Order of Australia in 2001 for his contributions to the Australian parliament.
