Tanaka was the third daughter of the seven children of her parents. She was born on January 2, 1903, but her family disputes that date, claiming she was born a year earlier on December 26, 1902, and that they delayed reporting her birth over fears that she may not survive.

Her birthplace is reported to be a village which is now part of Higashi-ku, Fukuoka in Japan.

Kane got married when she was barely 9 years old to her cousin, with whom they have four children. Her husband, Hideo Tanaka, who was later called into the military, died the day before.

She was moved into a nursing home in 2018 and had been there until her death. Tanaka indicated that her longevity is attributable to her faith in God, her family, sleep, hope, eating good food, and practising mathematics for her longevity.

At her advanced age, Kane used to eat strawberries and chocolates. She had revealed in interviews that the reason for her long life was due to her appetite and that she eats sweets, and coffee and even takes fizzy drinks.

She and her husband who used to sell food like sticky rice, Udon noodles, and Zenzai, could not have done without eating it themselves
