Karl Lagerfeld was a legendary fashion designer, photographer, and artist, who was born in Hamburg, Germany, on September 10, 1933.

The chemise dresses that Givenchy and Balenciaga debuted in 1957, was inspired by a dress design that Lagerfeld submitted to the International Wool Secretariat’s design competition in 1954.

After residing in Paris for two years, Lagerfeld entered the International Wool Secretariat’s coat design contest in 1955. He took first place in the coat category, and he became friends with Yves Saint Laurent, who took first place in the dress category and was soon hired by Pierre Balmain.

For three years, he served as Balmain’s assistant and later apprentice. In 1958, Lagerfeld was appointed artistic leader of Jean Patou. He moved to Rome in 1964 to pursue his studies in art history and begin working for Tiziani, but he started doing freelance design work for a variety of companies, including Charles Jourdan, ChloĆ©, Krizia, and Valentino.
