J. Mandela Barnes is an American politician, he was born on December 1st, 1986. As of 2019, he served as Wisconsin’s 45th lieutenant governor. He belonged to the Democratic Party and served as the 11th district’s state legislator from 2013 to 2017, however, Barnes is the first African American elected as lieutenant governor of Wisconsin.

Barnes attended Milwaukee’s Holy Redeemer Christian Academy, and also John Marshall High School, Milwaukee Public Schools, and Alabama A&M University. Throughout college, he was active with the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). He’s also claimed that Barack Obama’s 2004 Democratic National Convention keynote address pushed him to reconsider his post-college career.

In August 2019, Barnes acknowledged that, despite earlier claims that he had graduated from Alabama A&M, he had never actually earned his bachelor’s degree in 2008 because of what he called a “small technical glitch” with the homework in one subject. However on May 1, 2020, after working with the university to resolve the unfinished coursework issue, he was awarded his B.A. in communications media.
