Telkes traveled to the United States in 1925 to see a cousin who was the Hungarian consul in Cleveland at the time, and she stayed after being hired as a biophysicist by the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and also developed a photoelectric system for recording brain waves through a series of trials.

Later, Maria Telkes conducted research at many institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
