Salmonellosis symptoms are typically mild, and most patients recover without the need for special care. However, the resulting dehydration can occasionally become severe and life-threatening, especially in young patients and elderly patients.
Although significant Salmonella outbreaks frequently garner media attention, 60–80% of all salmonellosis cases are misdiagnosed as sporadic cases or are never even diagnosed as such. Both domesticated animals and wild animals carry the salmonella bacterium.
