While dragon beliefs vary greatly throughout cultures, since the High Middle Ages, dragons in western cultures have frequently been portrayed as winged, horned, four-legged, and able to breathe fire. The characteristics of dragons frequently combine elements of reptilian, feline, and avian species. Almost all cultures around the world include draconic creatures, and the first accounts of these animals have huge snake-like features. Ancient Mesopotamian art and literature both feature draconic creatures, which are originally mentioned in the myths of the ancient Near East. Nearly every mythology from the Indo-European and Near Eastern regions contains tales of storm-gods fighting enormous serpents.
