Bono has used his notoriety to draw attention to global issues such as global poverty and AIDS. TIME magazine named Bono “Person of the Year” in 2005, and Queen Elizabeth II appointed him an honorary knight in 2007.

Bono was born Paul David Hewson on May 10, 1960, in Dublin, Ireland, to a Roman Catholic postal worker and a Protestant mother who died when he was 14 years old.

He joined U2 in October 1976, while still in high school, and was called “Bono Vox” (good voice). He was named frontman for the Irish rock band despite the fact that his singing was less appealing than his stage appearance at the time.

U2 began touring nearly immediately after its debut album, Boy, was released in 1980. The Joshua Tree, their sixth album and the one that rocketed the band—and its outspoken frontman—to notoriety, was released in 1987.

Subsequent albums, such as 1991’s industrial-sounding Achtung Baby, 1993’s funkier-edged Zooropa, and the techno-influenced Pop, cemented U2’s reputation for diversity and invention (1997).

What does Bono stand for?

The name is derived from the Latin word meaning “good voice.” Guggi gave Hewson his moniker, which Bono originally despised but embraced after learning about its meaning.

Hewson has been referred to as “Bono” since he was 14 or 15. Aside from being his stage name.
