Mark was born to Sharon and Jerry Twain, an Ojibwa couple from the adjacent Mattagami First Nation. Jerry legally renamed the girls’ last names Twain after adopting them. Darryl was Jerry’s infant nephew who Jerry and Sharon adopted when his mother passed away when Mark was a little child. Because of Twain’s relationship to Jerry, it has been falsely claimed in the media that she is Ojibwe.
When asked why she had waited so long to officially identify Edwards as her father, Twain replied:
Jerry, my father, went above and beyond to raise three kids who weren’t even his. He would have been deeply saddened for me to accept another man as my father, a man who was never there for me as a father, who wasn’t the one who toiled every day to put food on our table. We lived as a unit. We never used the terms “step-father” or “step-brothers” in our household. It would have been the hardest slap in the face for him if you had called him my step-father.
