Derek Redmond was one of the 200 public figures who signed a letter to The Guardian in August 2014 opposing Scottish independence in the run-up to that issue’s September referendum. In 1985, Redmond ran the 400 meters in 44.82 seconds, which was the first time Derek Redmond had broken the British record. Roger Black went on to break this record, but Redmond reclaimed it in 1987. Redmond was a member of the squad that took home the gold in the 4×400-meter relay at the 1986 European Championships.
