She was born in London to an Irish father and a Jamaican mother. The singer claims that her mother, an admirer of American jazz music, gave her the name Ella Fitzgerald.

At the age of 12, Mai relocated from London to New York City, where she attended Queens High School of Teaching in Glen Oaks, Queens, before departing for her own country.

She competed for The X Factor as a member of the trio Arize, however, the group disbanded after the first round of auditions because they didn’t go past that point.

The next year, Ella Mai posted covers on Instagram along with a solo EP of original music to SoundCloud. Producer DJ Mustard was drawn to them, and in January 2016 he revealed that Mai had joined his 10 Summers label, which is distributed by Interscope.
