Ellen, the only child of Joshua and Sandra Greenberg, was born in New York City, New York. A blizzard hit Philadelphia on January 26, 2011, forcing Ellen Greenberg to leave her job and return to her Manayunk apartment, where she lived with her fiancé Samuel Goldberg, a Gladwyne-based television producer for NBC and later Golf.com. It was around 6:40 p.m. Ellen was pronounced dead that evening as a result of twenty stab wounds, ten of which were to her back and neck. Ellen’s right arm, abdomen, and right leg also had eleven bruises in various stages of resolution
Despite the lack of a suicide note, the crime scene was treated as a suicide. The Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office initially ruled the case a homicide following the autopsy. The case was reversed and officially ruled a suicide in February 2011 after the Philadelphia Police Department stated that “the death of Ellen Greenberg has not been ruled a homicide…Homicide investigators are considering the manner of death as suspicious at this time.”
