When M.I.A. was just six months old, her family moved to Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka from London, where she was born to Tamil immigrants from Sri Lanka.

The family had to migrate to London when M.I.A. was 11 years old since the Sri Lankan Civil War uprooted them when she was a little child. The war significantly influenced M.I.A.’s aesthetic perspective.

In 2000, she began her career as a visual artist, filmmaker, and designer. In 2002, she started her music career. Her tracks “Sunshowers” and “Galang” helped her gain early success as an underground musician in early 2004.
