He founded Infosys in 1981 and served as a chief executive officer from 1981 to 2002 and chairman from 2002 to 2011.

Murty is the son of Infosys founder Narayana Murthy and his engineer and novelist wife Sudha Murthy. Murty’s maternal uncle, professor of astrophysics and planetary science at California Institute of Technology Shrinivas Kulkarni, is rumoured to have been a significant influence on him.
