Professional mixed martial artist Tai Anthony Tuivasa was born in Australia on March 16, 1993.
A Samoan father and an Indigenous Australian (Wiradjuri) mother gave birth to Tuivasa in Sydney. He was raised in Mount Druitt, a suburb of western Sydney, where he mostly played rugby league, along with his 11 siblings. The Sydney Roosters rugby league franchise signed him to a contract in 2010, but he discontinued playing after developing a gambling addiction.

Carter Tuivasa is the only child that Tuivasa has with Brierley Pedro, Tyson Pedro’s sister who competes in the UFC light heavyweight division. Tuivasa now co-hosts The Half cast Podcast with Tyson Pedro and Andrew Fifita.
Since 2018, Tuivasa has celebrated his victories by performing a shoey and drinking beer from a borrowed shoe. The Sydney newspaper The Daily Telegraph coined the moniker “Shoeyvasa.” He won again at UFC 254, although he was prohibited from doing the shoey in the cage; yet, he has since started doing it.

In the Ultimate Fighting Championship, he currently competes in the Heavyweight division (UFC). He is currently ranked number 3 among heavyweights in the UFC as of February 14th, 2022.
