Maya’s family relocated to Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka when she was just six months old. This is also the city where her brother Sugu was born.
There, her father changed his name to Arular and became politically active, eventually becoming a founding member of a political Tamil organization called Eelam Revolutionary Organisation of Students (EROS). EROS is associated with LTTE.
Arulpragasam spent the first 11 years of his childhood moving about often as a result of the civil war that took place in Sri Lanka. Arulpragasam had limited interactions with her father at this time because, due to the threat posed by the Sri Lankan Army, her family was forced to go into hiding.
Maya has said that she and her family spent her youth in “big-time” poverty, but she also remembers some of the greatest memories of her life as coming from her time spent growing up in Jaffna.
Maya had her education in Catholic convent schools such as the Holy Family Convent in Jaffna. It was at these schools that she honed her artistic abilities, particularly her painting, and worked her way to the top of her class.
