As the wife of King Richard III, Anne Neville ruled England from 11 June 1456 until 16 March 1485.

She was the younger of Richard Neville’s two daughters, the 16th Earl of Warwick’s co-heiresses (the “Kingmaker”).

Prior to her union with Richard, she had held the title of Princess of Wales when married to Edward of Westminster, Prince of Wales, King Henry VI’s only child and potential successor.

The Wars of the Roses fought between the House of York and the House of Lancaster for control of England, saw Anne play a pivotal role as a member of the mighty House of Neville.

When she was a little girl, her father engaged her to Prince Edward, the son of King Henry VI.

The union was intended to forge a bond with the House of Lancaster and put an end to the conflict between those two families.

What happened to Anne Neville after Richard’s death?

At the age of 28 and following a period of bad health(tuberculosis), Anne passed away at the Palace of Westminster on March 16, 1485, during a solar eclipse.

She enjoyed a grand burial and was laid to rest in front of the Sedilia on the southern side of Abbey’s High Altar (seats for the priests).

She was buried without a tombstone or monument, presumably because Richard died at the Battle of Bosworth that year.
