Who Was Daunte Wright?

Daunte Wright was killed by a Brooklyn Center police officer during a routine traffic stop on April 11, 2021, shortly before 2 p.m. When he died, Wright was 20 years old, and he had a one-year-old son named Daunte Jr. Wright was killed after officers in Brooklyn Center stopped him for having expired license plates and an air freshener hanging from his rearview mirror. Brooklyn Center police said in a news release that officers pulled over a vehicle for a traffic violation shortly before 2 p.m. on April 11. When police attempted to arrest the driver, who had an outstanding warrant, he got back in his car, according to police. “One officer discharged their firearm, striking the driver,” police said. “The vehicle traveled several blocks before striking into another vehicle.”According to cops, the officer who fired the fatal shot intended to use a Taser rather than a handgun. The shooting was described as an “accidental discharge” by Police Chief Tim Gannon. The driver, identified as Daunte Wright, died at the scene, while his girlfriend, who was also in the vehicle, suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, according to police.

Mr. Wright was pulled over by Brooklyn Center police on April 11 to be arrested for an outstanding leave for a munitions violation. Before his death, Wright had led a life of crime and violence, having been involved in the shooting of two of his school friends, a home burglary, and previously assaulting and robbing a young woman at gunpoint. Jennifer LeMay said her son Caleb, now 18, was left permanently disabled after Wright, a former friend, allegedly shot him in the head at a gas station two years ago and left him to die. A lawsuit filed in May on behalf of her son describes the tragic events that occurred outside a Full Stop convenience store and gas station on May 14, 2019. According to the documents, Wright “discharged a firearm toward Caleb, striking him with a single shot bulled in the head, causing serious disabling, and permanent injuries.”

Chaos erupted at the courthouse following Kim Potter’s sentencing for shooting and killing Daunte Wright. After Kim Potter was sentenced to 16 months in prison for Wright’s murder, multiple people, including Wright’s sister Diamond, was handcuffed at the Hennepin County Government Center in a tense scene. “You’re being arrested for assault,” a police officer says as he takes Diamond into custody. Diamond Wright, Daunte Wright’s sister, is seen being detained in the video, along with at least one other person. According to WCCO’s David Schuman, Diamond was handcuffed and taken away shortly before noon. The dispute includes Daunte’s son’s mother, Chyna Whitaker, as well as Diamond and Daunte’s brother Damik.
