In The Falcon and the Snowman (1985), which closely mirrored a real-life criminal case, Penn portrayed Andrew Daulton Lee. Lee, a former heroin dealer who had been found guilty of spying for the Soviet Union and given a life sentence, was released on parole in 1998.

In addition to wanting to thank Lee for letting him portray Lee in the movie, Penn eventually recruited Lee as his personal assistant. Penn also firmly believed in rehabilitation and thought Lee should be effectively reintegrated into society since he was once again a free man.
