Who Is Sian Kingi?

Sian Kingi, a 12-year-old New Zealand Australian girl of Maori descent who was abducted, raped, and murdered in Noosa, Queensland in November 1987, was born on December 16, 1974, and died on November 27, 1987. Barrie John Watts and Valmae Faye Beck, a married couple, were convicted of the high-profile crime in 1988. Watts was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole; however, his wife would have been eligible for parole after 14.5 years but died while incarcerated. Watts abducted Sian, 12, into the backseat of a Holden Kingswood station wagon after luring her to help look for a ‘white poodle with a pink bow.’ Beck and Watts were both sentenced to life in prison, but Beck died in 2008, trying to take her secrets about other potential crimes with her to the grave, much to the chagrin of detectives. Watts, who is serving a life sentence at Wolston Correctional Centre, has applied for parole nearly 35 years later.

Valmae Beck, 44, and her 34-year-old partner Barry John Watts abducted the 12-year-old Noosa girl while she was riding her bike home in 1987. Beck agreed to assist him, and they kidnapped Sian and drove her to bushland in Tinbeerwah, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, west of Noosa. Sian’s mutilated body, still dressed in her year 7 Sunshine Beach school uniform, was discovered in a creek bed six days later. Watts was sentenced to life in prison for murder, 15 years in prison for rape, and three years in prison for deprivation of liberty, all to be served concurrently. Watts applied for release to the Queensland Parole Board in late 2020 but was denied this week. In 2009 and 2015, he was denied parole. Barrie sexually assaulted, hit, and suffocated Sian before ruthlessly stabbing her in the chest twelve times. He slashed her throat. Valmae, according to her own allegation, just stood there and watched as he did this.

Her body was discovered six days later in a nearby creek bed.

Watts marries Forte as John Fulton Beck, his birth name. She changes her name to Valmae Beck, and they live on the outskirts of Perth. She would later claim that he had beaten her and demanded that she dye her hair blonde and wear school uniforms. Sian was riding her bike home from school when Beck approached her in a Pinaroo Park and asked her to assist in the search for a missing poodle. Watts grabbed her from behind, threw her in the back of their car, and taped her arms and mouth shut. A fruit picker discovers Sian Kingi’s mutilated body in a creek bed at Tinbeerwah Forest. She’d been strangled, sexually assaulted, and stabbed a dozen times — each wound severe enough to be fatal. Beck was found guilty of Sian’s murder and attempting to kidnap the Target employee. She has been sentenced to life in prison. Watts is convicted of murdering Kingi and attempting to kidnap the Target employee. He is sentenced to life in prison. Watts protests his innocence as Beck testifies against him. Detectives in Brisbane re-investigate Watts and Beck in connection with Ms Feeney’s disappearance. Watts admits for the first time that he raped and murdered Sian. Beck passes away at Townsville Base Hospital. Watts requests parole.
