The official test for non-native speakers of mainland China’s Standard Chinese (a subset of Mandarin Chinese), including foreign students and overseas Chinese, is the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK), sometimes known as the Chinese Proficiency Test. The test is administered by Hanban, a division of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.
Taiwan is the only place where the test can be taken; elsewhere, it cannot be taken. Mainland China, in turn, does not offer the TOCFL exam.
The HSK exam was created by the Beijing Language and Culture University and officially recognized as a national standardized test in 1992 online.
By the year 2005, almost 100 million people had taken the exams, and more than 120 countries had served as regular host locations (domestic ethnic minority candidates included). According to reports, there are about 1.9 million candidates altogether from nations other than China. The Beijing International Chinese College hosted the HSK test’s initial administration in 2011.
What is a good HSK score?
60% is the cutoff for passing each HSK level and is considered a respectable HSK score. HSK 1 and 2 require 120 out of a possible 200 points to pass. For HSK levels 3, 4, 5, or 6, 180 points out of 300 are required for passing.
