Bassett was born in New York City. Bassett is the daughter of government-employed social workers Betty Jane Bassett and Daniel Benjamin Bassett. The middle name Bassett was given to her in honour of her aunt Evelyn. Due to her mother’s following pregnancy, D’nette, Bassett’s sister, was born ten months after Bassett.
