On January 8, 1956, Archibald William Roach was born in Mooroopna, Victoria. An Aboriginal phrase used to describe a bend in the Goulburn River close to Shepparton in central Victoria is the source of the name Mooroopna.
Roach is Bundjalung and Gunditjmara by descent. Roach’s family and the rest of the local Aboriginal community were relocated to the Rumbalara mission in 1956. Later, the family relocated to Framlingham, where his mother was born.
When Roach was fifteen, his natural sister called him and informed him that their mother had passed away. He battled alcoholism for the following fourteen years while living on the streets.
