The nickname was given to McFarland because, according to Booger, he was a bad child who got into a lot of strange things when he was younger. I used to go by many other names. That was the only one that held up, though.

Booger McFarland played collegiate football at Louisiana State University before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected him in the first round of the 1999 NFL Draft.

Before the station’s entire airstaff was released for a music format in December 2014 as a result of a change in ownership, McFarland and Marc Ryan co-hosted a radio show on Tampa sports radio station WHFS.

He also made a tackle in the 1995 Independence Bowl victory for LSU over Michigan State. Since his second year, he has concentrated on defensive tackle. He helped the Tigers win two more bowl games, the 1996 Peach Bowl and the 1997 Independence Bowl, and was chosen as the SEC Defensive MVP of the 1996 Peach Bowl.

McFarland was chosen defensive co-captain for his senior year despite the Tigers’ startling collapse in the 1998 campaign. He also received first-team All-SEC and All-America accolades and participated in the 1999 Senior Bowl.
