Johnson grew up in New York City, London, and Brussels before going to boarding school in England. He was awarded a scholarship to Eton College and went on to study classics at Balliol College, Oxford, where he was president of the Oxford Union.
Johnson began his career in journalism after temporarily working as a management consultant.

Johnson began working as a reporter for The Times in 1987 but was sacked for inventing a quotation. He subsequently went to work for The Daily Telegraph, where he was a journalist covering the European Community (1989-1994) and then an assistant editor (1994–99).

Johnson began writing political columns for The Spectator in 1994, and in 1999 he was chosen as the magazine’s editor, a position he held until 2005.
