In 1992, Crist won a seat in the Florida Senate for the 20th district, which included some sections of South Tampa and St. Petersburg, for a two-year term after the elections. He beat Tampa’s longstanding Democratic incumbent State Senator Helen Gordon Davis, 58.3 to 41.7%.
After the 1992 decennial redistricting exercise, which radically altered the districts in the Tampa Bay region, Crist was able to defeat Gordon Davis.
