He was a four-star recruit at Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he was enrolled. Buckner also participated in basketball sporting activity during his high school days.
He went to the University of Oregon and played college football. San Francisco 49ers picked him in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. 2019 saw Buckner selected to the second team of the All-Pro Pro Bowl while playing with the 49ers and was chosen for the Colts’ first-team, that is the “All-Pro” team in 2020, and the following year, being 2021 he made the Pro Bowl.

Interestingly, Kaimi Fairbairn, the Houston Texans’ kicker at the time, was a teammate of Buckner’s. Buckner pledged to play varsity football for the University of Oregon in January 2012.
