Bates, who was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, has been regarded as a top talent by analysts since he was in middle school. He led his Lincoln High School squad to a state victory as a freshman in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The next season, Bates became the first sophomore to be named Gatorade National Player of the Year for Boys. Bates transferred to Ypsi Prep Academy, a new prep school founded by his father, for his senior year of high school (which should have been his junior year).

Bates was involved in a skirmish that resulted in a double technical penalty and the removal of an opponent player on March 9, during a win against Pioneer High School in the first round of the state playoffs. For the second year in a row, he was voted Michigan AP Division 1 Player of the Year and Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year.

Bates revealed before his junior season that he will move to Ypsi Prep Academy, a new prep school in Ypsilanti founded by his father. Bates made his debut with the program on November 12, 2020, scoring 36 points in a 78-71 exhibition game loss to Chet Holmgren and Team Sizzle. Bates averaged 23 points, 5.8 rebounds, three assists, and 2.2 steals per game as a junior, helping his team to a 7-3 record. Bates was one of five Naismith Prep Player of the Year finalists. Following the season, Bates reclassified to the 2021 class, skipping his final year of high school.
